Evidence of life in Earths oldest rocks | Nature

ISUA is an ophiolite, a rock created by plate tectonics, that is 3.8 billion years old. It was discovered in 2007 on an island off the coast of Greenland and challenges the previous record of 4.28 billion years for the oldest rocks on Earth.

In these graphitic metapelites from Isua, samples with >2 wt% K contain >20 μg/g of nitrogen, suggesting that a significant fraction of the total nitrogen content is hosted in potassic silicate minerals (Stüeken et al., 2021).

Recent reports 1-4 have described "yeast-like microfossils" (Isuasphaera isua Pflug 2) in 3,800-Myr old 5 metaquartzites from the Isua supracrustal belt of south-west Greenland.

Review of the Isua supracrustal belt area (Greenland) Eoarchean geology ...

The Isua supracrustal belt of southern West Greenland (Fig. 20.1) is the world's only locale in Eoarchean rocks where there are lacunae of sufficiently low strain and low metamorphic grade (i.e., below the migmatization level), such that any details of the origin and evolution of the most ancient sedimentary sequences can be established. As ...

In the early 1970s, Vic McGregor and Stephen Moorbath demonstrated that the Isua supracrustal belt (Greenland) and its surrounding orthogneisses formed in the Eoarchean (Moorbath et al., 1972, 1973). Fifty years later, these rocks are a key resource globally for understanding the Eoarchean Earth.
